"We started Foundations Hospice because families in Southeast Louisiana deserve more than a call center. When you reach out to us, you hear from someone who genuinely cares about what happens next for your loved one."

When Is Hospice the Right Choice?

Many families wonder if it's too soon or worry that calling a hospice team means giving up. It doesn't.

Hospice is a shift in focus, from trying to cure an illness to making sure your loved one is as comfortable, supported, and present as possible. It is a choice made out of love.

You may want to speak with our team if your loved one has been hospitalized two or more times in the past six months, is experiencing pain or symptoms that are difficult to manage, has been told that treatment is no longer improving their condition, needs more help with daily activities like bathing, eating, or moving around or has expressed a wish to focus on quality of life rather than continued treatment.

If any of these sound familiar, a conversation with our team costs nothing and carries no obligation.

Who Pays for Hospice Care?

For most families, hospice care costs nothing out of pocket.

Hospice services are:

  • 100% covered by Medicare

  • Covered by Medicaid for eligible patients

  • Often covered by private insurance

Coverage typically includes:

  • Visits from the hospice care team

  • Medications related to the hospice diagnosis

  • Medical equipment and supplies

  • Emotional, spiritual, and family support

  • Bereavement support for loved ones

Our team explains everything clearly so you understand benefits and coverage before care begins.

Why Earlier Hospice Care Often Means Better Care

Many families wait, hoping for a different outcome or fearing that calling hospice means the end is immediate. We understand that hesitation deeply.

What research consistently shows is that patients who begin hospice care earlier tend to experience better pain and symptom management, fewer emergency room visits, and more meaningful time with the people they love. Families report feeling less overwhelmed and more supported throughout the process.

Hospice is not about how much time is left. It is about making the time that remains as comfortable and connected as possible.

Common Questions From Families

How often will the hospice team visit?

Visit frequency is based on clinical needs and may change over time. Some patients require frequent visits, while others need less. Our team regularly reassesses care to ensure comfort and support.

Is hospice care covered by Medicare and Medicaid?

Yes. Hospice care is fully covered by Medicare and Medicaid for eligible patients, including medications related to the hospice diagnosis, medical equipment, supplies, and care from the hospice team.

Can my loved one keep their own doctor?

Yes. Patients may keep their attending physician while also receiving support from our hospice medical director and interdisciplinary team.

Is hospice a contract? Can we change our minds?

Hospice is not a permanent contract. Patients may choose to stop hospice care or be discharged at any time if goals or circumstances change.

Is hospice the same as palliative care?

Hospice care focuses on comfort when curative treatment is no longer pursued. Palliative care focuses on symptom management and quality of life and may be appropriate earlier in serious illness.

Do you provide 24-hour care?

Our team is available 24/7 for support, guidance, and urgent needs. Our 24/7 care is not a sitter service, but we help families understand options if additional private-duty support is needed.

Hospice Is Not a Place. Care Comes to You.

One of the most common questions families ask is:

“Where does hospice happen?”

Hospice care is provided wherever the patient lives, including private homes, assisted living communities, nursing facilities and group homes.

Your loved one stays in a familiar environment, surrounded by the people and things that matter most, while our clinical team provides professional medical and emotional support.
